The original image of the Nine-Colored Deer was created during the Northern Wei Dynasty. It was the Nine-Colored Deer King in the mural "The Birth of the Deer King" in the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. The content was derived from the "Nine-Colored Deer Sutra". Later, in 1981, the Shanghai Fine Arts Film Studio of China adapted the material from Cave 257 of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang into the classic animated film "Nine-Colored Deer".
